The Municipal Archaeology Museum of Cartagena constitutes the main axis of the archaeological activities of the city and its region. Its collections, beginning from the 16th Century, kept increasing until they were finally collected in an old building that would become the first Museum, founded in 1943.
Although its transfer to a new place in the Muelle de Alfonso XII is currently projected, it may be currently found in such a unique place as the Dique de Navidad. This museum, like the National Centre for Submarine Archaeology Research, was founded in June, 1980, although it did not open until 1982, celebrating the 7th International Congress for Submarine Archaeology.
The Naval Museum of Cartagena, opened on July 8th, 1986, may be found in a beautiful modernist building. Its subject matter mainly covers the Navy in the Mediterranean Sea; the Submarines, Naval Construction in Cartagena and Mediterranean Cartography, etc.
The Ethnographic Museum of the Campo de Cartagena may be found in the Santa Bárbara Ports' delegation, in the western part of the Campo de Cartagena. The location map may be found clicking here. The building was opened to the public on April 26th, 2003, and it was formally unveiled by Pilar Barreiro Álvarez, mayoress of Cartagena.
These galleries, which were dug out inside the hill of La Concepción as antiaircraft refuges, were not finished due to the end of the war and was part of some of the works performed to build refuges for about 5,500 people. Since the city was the Naval Base for most of the Republican fleet, it was severely affected by the bombings.
In 1995, the local writer and RAE-member Carmen Conde agreed with the City Council of Cartagena to donate the furniture and equipment from her former living room and office in Madrid, as well as her invaluable archives-library.
All of this has been placed in the 'Ramón Alonso Luzzy' Cultural Centre, where one of the rooms faithfully reflects the atmosphere in which the marriage created part of their important work. Thus was born the Carmen Conde-Antonio Oliver Museum.
